LONDON (AP) - Palace officials say Prince William's wife Kate has given birth to a baby boy.

Officials said Monday the baby was born at 4:24 p.m. and weighs 8 pounds 6 ounces. The infant will become third in line for the British throne after Prince Charles and William.

Kate checked into a private wing at St. Mary's Hospital in central London early Monday morning. William spent the long hours of labor at her bedside. This is the couple's first child.

In celebration of the birth, Altru's Family Birthing Center in Grand Forks will crown the first boy and girl born Monday as Prince and Princess of Grand Forks. Mayor Michael Brown says this is a great opportunity to recognize the youth in the city.

Brown: "Part of the Grand Forks promise is our commitment to our youth and this time when England is celebrating their birth of their royal member, well Grand Forks is going to celebrate our prince and princess at the same time."

Along with their crowns, the prince and princess will also receive a key to the city and a onesie.
