The Red Lake Reservation is getting a 21 million dollar loan for a new government center and an expansion to the Red Lake Nation College.
Nearly 400 people came to the groundbreaking for the two new facilities Thursday afternoon, to be built on the shores of Red Lake. USDA Rural Development is providing the loans. The new government center will house all government facilities under one roof. The college will facilitate up to 525 students. The current school is maxed out at 120 students. Red Lake Nation College President Dan King says the new facilities are the best investment the tribe has ever made.
King: "We need improved government facilities and we need access to higher education for our members, because we think long term our solution to ending poverty and developing as a community is more education."
The construction is expected to be completed by the fall of next year.
