The recently crowned Miss North Dakota Laura Harmon greeted supporters tonight during a fundraiser in her hometown of Grand Forks.

The 23 year old won the title in June after competing for four years.

A former UND student, Harmon's taking a year off to represent the Miss America organization throughout the state.

Her platform is Energy Kids, which focuses on raising responsible energy users.

Miss North Dakota has never been crowned Miss America, but Harmon's hoping to change that.

Laura Harmon, Miss North Dakota: "North Dakota is expanding in so many ways right now. We are becoming a leader in a lot of different areas around the country. So I think that shows the Miss America organization that they are ready for a Miss America to come from North Dakota."

The Miss America pageant will be broadcast live on ABC September 15th.
