In North Dakota, more than 320 new laws took effect at midnight.
Here are a few:
There is a measure that allows churchgoers to carry a gun at church, if officials at the church allow it.
Someone convicted of bribery can run for city council.
And Motorists who strike a deer or other animal no longer need to report the crash to law enforcement.
And one of the most followed pieces of legislation this session, cruelty to animals can now be prosecuted as a felony.
Arlette Moen, Circle of Friends Humane Society: "North Dakota is now among all the states except one I believe that does have a felony in place for cruelty. I guess time will tell how effective it's going to be in protecting animals."
Moen says she's pleased to see this new law take effect. However, she is disappointed that the new law doesn't do more to crack down on other forms of animal abuse and neglect.
