A 52-year-old Lidgerwood, ND, woman is recovering at home after spending several days at Sanford Medical Center, where she was treated for a confirmed case of West Nile Virus. At first her illness mimicked the flu. Connie and Rick Whittier had no idea the dead birds in their yard and neighborhood were an early warning. Birds are the reservoir for the virus; mosquitoes become infected when they bite a sick bird, then transmit the virus when they feed again. West Nile can be fatal. Last year North Dakota had one fatality. We're at the peak period now, but risk will linger till hard freeze.
