Sex offenders on the Spirit Lake reservation were under scrutiny this week with the US Marshals Service paying a visit to the reservation.
The Marshals were checking to see if Spirit Lake sex offenders were complying with registration laws, and the news was good. Marshals say most sex offenders on Spirit Lake are complying with registration laws.
Officers say there are 41 registered sex offenders on the reservation and they spoke with every one of them this week to see if they are complying with federal, state and tribal laws. No arrests were made.
Sex offenders are required to tell law enforcement where they live, work and go to school. They must notify police within three days if that information changes. US Marshall Paul Ward says the tribe has a high rate of compliance, but compliance levels might not be at 100 percent. The Marshals will investigate three offenders further to determine if they violated any laws.
