An 8-year-old Thief River Falls boy is recovering after suffering burns on his face and leg while trying to build a bonfire with two other boys Sunday afternoon.

Christian Baughman said he, his little brother and a friend were playing on their own in the woods when they decided to build a fire.

They had found a tractor tire and stuffed it with newspaper.

“My brother lit the fire then Nicky threw the gas on the tire and I was too close and I got blown back by the fire and it burned my leg on fire,” Baughman said.

He said he hopes other kids will learn from what happened to him.

His mom said his recovery is going well. Police said the other two boys, ages 7 and 10, suffered minor injuries to their hands.

Fire officials said parents should keep matches, fireworks and lighters out of their kids’ reach.
