Just in time for the start of the school year, the Grand Forks police department offered free ID cards for kids.

Parents lined up to get ID cards Wednesday at the Grand Forks public library. Each card features an updated photo along with a name and any medical conditions the child may have. Authorities hope the cards can help in an emergency situation.

"Whether you're in a park or a supermarket or at a fair, you have that information in your hand ready to hand to police or security if your child's gone missing," said Brian Cofer with the Grand Forks Police Department.

If you missed out on a chance to get your child an ID card, Grand Forks police offer the cards periodically throughout the year at local events.
