After taxpayers recently criticized the Grand Forks School Board for a proposed tax increase, school officials maintain that the step is necessary to soak up its $5.4 million deficit.

A number of factors led to the deficit including reduced federal funding, and an increased number of staff members in the district. Some people have suggested that the school hold off on building a new school costing about $15 million, but school officials disagree, citing increasing enrollment.
