In an unusual case of counterfeit currency, a man tried to pay with a fake $10 bill at the "Big Cigs" Valley Dairy store in Grand Forks.

Police responded and talked to the customer, who is from the area and claimed to be a victim himself of the bad money, telling police he "got the cash from another transaction". Police say a fake ten dollar bill is rare in Grand Forks. An alert Valley Dairy clerk checked it with a marker.

"It kind of took me off guard a little bit," said sales associated Alex Sidles. "I almost didn't know what to do even though I know the procedure. It's just like...you don't expect counterfeit bills to come through your till. It was a little surprising."

The investigation continues and federal treasury officials have been notified.
