The city of Grand Forks is well protected from flooding by a permanent flood control system, Grand Forks county could still face challenges.

Today Congressman Earl Pomeroy met with Grand Forks city and county officials to talk about the spring flood effort.

Forecasters say the Red River Valley could face major flooding again this year.

The state has requested an advance disaster declaration for 18 counties...including Grand Forks.

Representative Earl Pomeroy / (D) North Dakota: "I am certain that there will be the federal declaration allowing the advanced funding to flow so that communities will have the support of the federal government to protect themselves in advance of a flood."

Grand Forks Emergency Manager Jim Campbell estimates about 100 county homes will need some sort of help with the flood fight this year.
