Grand Forks, ND – In partnership with Altru Health System, TEARS (Together We Educate About the Reality of Suicide) will offer free registration for the internationally-recognized suicide prevention training program, ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training). Registrations are offered to schools, law enforcement, fire departments, hospitals and chaplaincy groups in the community and region. The course will be offered on August 22 and 23.

The workshop will be facilitated by Shelle Michaels Aberle, President and CEO of Military Ovation, a group providing support and resources to troops, veterans and their families from North Dakota. By the end of the program, participants will be equipped to:

· dispel myths about suicide

· identify the indicators and assess suicidal risk, and

· reduce attitudinal barriers, which hinder the ability to be direct and comfortable with suicidal situations,

· intervene with an individual at risk of suicide.

To register for ASIST, contact Mike Dewald, manager of Altru Psychiatry Center, at 701.780.3451. Funds for registrations are supported by the TEARS Walk for Suicide Prevention. This year’s walk will take place Sunday, September 15, 2013. For details, visit altru.org/suicideprevention
