Police and firefighters in Devils Lake are competing this week, to see who can bring in more blood donors for area hospitals. The first annual "battle of the badges" blood drive kicked off Wednesday in Devils Lake.

The local police and fire departments are trying to recruit as many people as possible to donate to United Blood Services. Donors wore a sticker displaying which group they support. The winning team will get a plaque, along with bragging rites. About 60 people have signed up beforehand to donate so far. Organizers say police and firefighters make good recruiters.

Linda Elliot says," A lot of these individuals are first responders on accidents and things like that and they're very aware of how our need for blood donations is."

Early on, team fire has jumped out to a lead over team police, but there's plenty of time to even the score. The blood drive continues Thursday from 11:30 AM to 6:00 PM at Lake Region State College.
