Minnesota's budget deficit is hitting the University of Minnesota system hard, and its Crookston campus is feeling the impact of that as well. UMC is facing budget cuts of about $560,000 for the 2010-2011 year. The school isn't filling some positions that are open, and support budgets have been reduced. Students will feel the cuts too, as tuition will increase 7%. After mitigation of federal stimulus money, Minnesota residents will see an increase of 4.5%. But enrollment is up, and tuition money will be higher than state support.
Andrew Svec/Director Of Communications: "Staff will have to do a little bit extra here and there, but we really did try to target it so that we don't affect the academic programs, for the quality we're really striving to maintain, that academic quality."
UMC administrators will be finalizing cut suggestions and having another budget meeting in the Twin Cities tomorrow.
