An appeals court preparing to decide who is the rightful Spirit Lake Tribal Chairman has cancelled oral arguments in the case.

Judges for the Northern Plains Inter-tribal Court of Appeals will instead base their decision solely on legal briefs presented by each side. Roger Yankton and Russ McDonald both claim to be the rightful tribal chairman. The hearing was originally scheduled to be held at the UND law school Friday but the university backed out last week. The clerk for the appeals court says after that. Yankton's lawyers pushed for oral arguments to be cancelled. The court says a decision in the case could come as early as Friday.
