UN reports peacekeeper killed in eastern Congo

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) - The United Nations says one of its peacekeepers has been killed in eastern Congo.

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) - The United Nations says one of its peacekeepers has been killed in eastern Congo.

U.N. spokesman Farhan Haq announced in New York on Wednesday that three other U.N. troops had been wounded in the ongoing battles.

The nationality of the slain U.N. peacekeeper was not immediately known and no other details were given.

The U.N. involvement in the latest flare up of violence this month is unprecedented in the history of its enormous peacekeeping mission in Congo.

Earlier this year, the U.N. Security Council authorized a special intervention brigade to join Congolese troops on the frontline and fight rebels as part of their broader mandate to protect civilians.

On Wednesday, U.N. helicopters pounded rebel positions just north of the provincial capital of Goma, a provincial capital of 1 million people.
