One month later, same-sex marriage licenses business as usual in Polk County

It's been almost a month since same-sex marriages became legal in Minnesota. Officials with the Polk County Government Center say it's been a smooth transition.

Since August 1st, 14 same-sex marriage licenses have been granted in Polk County. Marriage licenses cost $115 without premarital counseling, and $40 with counseling. That's at least 500 extra dollars going back to the county just this month. Michelle Cote issues the licenses in Polk County and she says they've upgraded their software to make it more generic. For example, bride and groom is replaced with applicant one and applicant two.

"I would say it's been very smooth," Cote said. "It's just business as usual, we just have a new customer base, and it's been relatively seamless."

Cote says the demand for all marriage licenses is starting to slow down, which usually happens this time of year.
