The largest union in the state, North Dakota United, is official. The new organization, that has been several years in the making, is a merger of the North Dakota Education Association and the North Dakota Public Employees Association with more than 10,000 members, making it larger than all of the other unions in the state, combined.

Officials say the new union brings together employees from both public schools and higher education and covers a "broad swath" of employees across the state, from healthcare professionals to snowplow operators. The marriage is built around common themes, like protecting workers' pensions.

North Dakota United has scheduled its first official board meeting this weekend in Fargo.
