Walsh County deputy injures suspect in shooting incident

At around 8:07 Tuesday night the Walsh County Sheriff's Office received a call of a man threatening suicide. Units responded to a farm west of Lankin, ND on County Road 15.

At around 8:07 Tuesday night the Walsh County Sheriff's Office received a call of a man threatening suicide. Units responded to a farm west of Lankin, ND on County Road 15.

When officers arrived they heard shots being fired. Additional officers were called in from the Highway Patrol, Nelson County and Ramsey County.

Officers entered the farmyard and escorted several family members out of the house to safety. After searching the the premises, 25-year-old Nathan Paul McNelis of Park River was discovered in the back yard with a shotgun which he was raising at the officers. A Walsh County Deputy fired 3 rounds, one hitting McNelis and knocking him to the ground. McNelis was then secured and transported to First Care Hospital in Park River and subsequently airlifted to Altru hospital in Grand Forks where he remains in serious condition. The North Dakota Crime Bureau is investigating.
