A Park River man remains in serious condition at Altru Hospital Thursday evening after being shot by a Walsh County Deputy.

25-year-old Nathan McNelis was shot just before 10:00 pm Tuesday about 10 miles west of Lankin. Police say when they responded to a call for a suicidal person they heard gunshots being fired in the farmyard.

Walsh County Authorities found McNelis in the woods with a shotgun. Police say McNelis started to point the gun at several officers. Authorities say a Walsh County Deputy fired 3 rounds, striking McNelis underneath the armpit and knocking him to the ground. The deputy who shot the suspect has been placed on administrative leave -- standard procedure until the investigation is complete. The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigations is leading the case.
