(GRAND FORKS) -- Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, will go down as a landmark day for UND athletics. It was the day ground was broken on UND's long-awaited indoor practice facility.

The UND Athletics High Performance Center has been on UND's wish list for decades. The facility will be built on the site of the old Ralph Engelstad Arena.

The facility will include a 100-yard football field plus a 300-meter, eight-lane track and seating for 1,500.

ALtru Health System is contributing $9 million of the $13 million price tag. Scheels has pitched in another $1 million.

UND officials say the facility will be used by all sports programs.
