Nickname Supporters Have Signed Petition In Ft. Yates

Nickname supporters on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation say they have a petition ready, and they will present it to the tribal council asking for a reservation wide vote to gauge tribal approval on the future of the name and logo.

Nickname supporters on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation say they have a petition ready, and they will present it to the tribal council asking for a reservation wide vote to gauge tribal approval on the future of the name and logo.

The group circulating the petition says they wanted to give the council the petition today, which has more than 900-signatures on it in support of the name.

But they've decided to wait until Monday to get more signatures. They want around 1-thousand.

Tribal chair Charlie Murphy told WDAZ today if all names on a petition were verified and the petition was considered valid, he would present it to the council for a vote.

Murphy said if it were to pass a reservation wide vote could take up to two months to organize. To this point the council has not allowed a reservation wide vote.
