A man convicted of killing a toddler in Ada, Minnesota has been sentenced to 20 years behind bars.
25-year-old Raul Perez of Dilworth pleaded guilty to second degree murder last month. He was charged in the death of 22-month-old Ariel Reyes -- the daughter of Perez's girlfriend at the time. Ariel died of head and neck trauma while Perez was watching her and her brother.
Some of Ariel's family members say the sentence, which is much higher than the guidelines recommend, is still not enough.
"It's not enough. It was justice, but not enough," said Ariel's aunt, Ida Reyes. "He took an innocent child's life that we will never get to enjoy."
Two aggravating factors in the crime played into the higher sentence -- Perez being in a position of trust or authority -- and the fact that another child witnessed the crime. Ariel's now six-year-old brother Alex testified today.
