About 150 Red River High School students walked out of a back to school dance Last Friday after being warned that they were exhibiting behavior not acceptable for school dances.
Inappropriate dancing has recently been in then national news but now with the events at Red River, it's in the local spotlight with many expressing their concerns. A few days ago Miley Cyrus made headlines at the MTV Music Video Awards with her explicit grinding and so-called twerking.
Similar dancing at Red River's dance caused school faculty to ask students to stop or leave. School officials say that expectations for appropriate behavior are the same at a school dance as they are for students in the classroom or at any other school function. Today, people said provided support for the school and concern for the type of dancing taking place.
"I commend the faculty for actually have some standards and not putting up with it," said Larimore resident Rachel Anderson.
"With respect to the Miley Cyrus-type grind dancing -- That sort of thing, I don't know that the high school place would really be a good place for it," offered Dale Johnson of Thompson.
Red River Principal Kris Arason says the school will continue to provide dances.
