(GRAND FORKS) -- Redshirt freshman Joe Mollberg will make his first collegiate start at quarterback Saturday when UND plays host to Montana.
Head coach Chris Mussman announced Thursday that the native of Detroit Lakes, Minn., will replace another redshirt freshman, Ryan Bartels, as the starter.
Mollberg relieved Bartels in the third quarter of last week's Potato Bowl game vs. South Dakota State, with UND trailing by 21 points.
Mollberg passed for 259 yards and two touchdowns.
UND lost the game 35-28, but the performance was apparently enough to convince Mussman to make a change.
"I thought Joe did a nice job in the second half coming in," Mussman told WDAZ's Dan Corey. "Not that Ryan did a poor job. It's just that we've got a hot hand (in Mollberg), and we'll continue to see if that's the case. Obviously, we'd love to have one guy step up and take it, but you know, really, as freshmen, (Mollberg and Bartels) have played one full game."
Mollberg relieved Bartels during UND's season opener vs. Valparaiso. UND won the game 69-10.
Saturday's game with Montana is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
