Ground breaking ceremony for new ice arena complex in Grand Forks

The Grand Forks Park district held a ground breaking ceremony Thursday for a new ice arena complex. The eight and a half million dollar facility will be built just south of the Choice Health and Fitness center on the south end of town.

The Grand Forks Park district held a ground breaking ceremony Thursday for a new ice arena complex. The eight and a half million dollar facility will be built just south of the Choice Health and Fitness center on the south end of town.

Ground work will be in full swing with the actually construction starting next month. The complex will be called the ICON Sports Center. Here are some of the stats of the facility to give you an idea on the size of the project, It will be more than 76 thousand square feet, 2 sheets of ice, 10 locker rooms, seating for 500 people, with two concession stands.

Fundraising continues for the project with about $900,000 still needed to be raised, but the Park District says they wanted to get started on this to save money with an existing contract. The rink should be completed next year of 2014.
