Fargo Closer To Goal Of One Million Sandbags
Fargo officials say hundreds of volunteers are helping the city get closer to having a million sandbags filled as the Red River keeps rising.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) - Fargo officials say hundreds of volunteers
are helping the city get closer to having a million sandbags filled
as the Red River keeps rising.
The Red River at Fargo was above 21 feet Sunday after rising
into a minor flood stage a day earlier - about 36 hours sooner than
expected.
More than 400 volunteers filled 81,000 sandbags on Saturday,
raising the total to 740,000 after two weeks of work. The river is
now expected to hit major flood stage, or 30 feet, on Thursday.
Last spring, the Red hit a record 40.84 feet.
Residents in the nation's midsection are preparing for rising
waters this spring where rivers such as the Red, the Mississippi
and the Missouri flow through populated areas.
