A Thompson man facing felony charges of child neglect and abuse goes on trial Tuesday in Grand Forks.
32-year-old James Hume could face up to five years in prison on each count if he's convicted. Hume also faces a separate but related charge of felony terrorizing.
The charges stem from Hume living with three young children in what investigators called an unsanitary garage with dangerous chemicals and no running water. In September 2012, officers found the attached house filled with animals including more than 50 cats, dogs, chickens, birds, rabbits, ducks, geese and a snake. Officers with the Grand Forks Sheriff's office say living conditions were the worst they've ever seen.
