A liquor store plans to open a second location in a new retail center on South 42nd Street, across from the Alerus Center in Grand Forks.

The owners of the Rite Spot store at 1901 S. Washington St. will open the Rite Spot 2 at 801 S. 42nd St. sometime in October, said store manager and co-owner Tom Montgomery.

The 3,500-square-foot store will be the first business to open in the new 42nd Street Square strip mall.

The area around the store has been the site of brisk development over the past few years as several new apartments and hotels have been built nearby. That and the Alerus Center make the location a convenient spot to serve a big population of customers.

“That’s what we’re kind of banking on,” Montgomery said. “There’s just a lot of new businesses and new construction in that area.”

The store will share the strip mall with the first North Dakota location for Tim Hortons, a coffee and doughnut chain and a major Canadian brand.

“It’s a location that we’ve been looking at for quite a while,” Montgomery said.

Montgomery and his partners bought the Rite Spot in April.
