FARGO, N.D. (AP) - A five-day flood fight is on in eastern North
Dakota and western Minnesota.
Police were escorting convoys of trucks carrying loads of
sandbags into the lowest areas of Fargo on Monday morning as the
Red River continued its rapid rise. The river is expected to crest
on Saturday about 20 feet above flood stage and 3 feet below last
year's record crest.
City and county officials held an emergency meeting Monday after
the National Weather Service bumped up its flood crest forecast
because of warm weather and rain. Officials mapped out plans to
deliver sandbags and build clay levees.
Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker says the city is prepared to hold
back the water. But he says "the emphasis has changed
