The Grand Forks Senior Center is in the process of looking for a location to build a new facility. Officials say a new building is needed because of both a lack of space and a rising number of seniors.

The current senior center has been in operation since 1977. Last year the center provided services to over 2,400 people. That number is expected to be well over 2,700 this year with a continued rise in the future.

The senior center provides a variety of entertainment and services including bingo, card games, resources for health services, transportation and meals on wheels. Seniors say the new building is something that is needed. A private campaign to begin raising funds is expected to start in 2014. It's hoped that ground can be broken in 2017 or 2018. The current senior center will remain open and operating even when the new building is complete.
