Senator Heidi Heitkamp says because of delays in the house she doesn't believe a farm bill will be drafted by the September 30th deadline.
The bill was originally due on September 30th of last year. Congress has been working on extensions. Senator Heitkamp doesn't believe Congress will get another extension if the deadline is missed this time.
Last week the house passed its version of the nutrition assistance program. The House was ready to appoint conferees and begin the process of finalizing a comprehensive farm bill to present to the president this week. But in a media phone conference today Heitkamp says the House has yet to appoint conferees and the deadline could very well be missed.
"It almost has become a metaphor, the farm bill that is. A metaphor for what's wrong in Washington, DC that we can't do something as vitally important to 16 million jobs and the people who produce our food in this country as passing a long term farm bill," said Heitkamp.
For this crop year farmers will adhere to the farm bill that was in affect when they planted their crops last spring.
