The fate of the Saint Michael representative on the Spirit Lake tribal council is up in the air after a recall vote ended in a tie Monday. Tribal members in Saint Michael will now have to meet again later this week to try and answer the same question they failed to Monday. 93 people voted to keep Mardell Lewis on the Spirit Lake tribal council and 93 people voted to remove her from office.

A petition circulated, accusing Lewis of abusing her tribal authority for her own interests while mistreating her constituents. Lewis denies those claims, but petitioners collected 169 valid signatures triggering the recall. Chairman Russ McDonald says this is uncharted territory for Spirit Lake. The tribe reached out for advice and decided the best option was to vote again.

The next vote is scheduled this Friday morning at 10:00 at the Saint Micheal Rec center.
