A 20-year-old man was arrested Tuesday night as a suspect in an apartment break-in that allegedly included robbery and sexual assault.
Antonio Raheem Matthews, Grand Forks, was in custody on unrelated municipal warrants when he was arrested on two counts of gross sexual imposition, according to Grand Forks Police.
Lt. Jim Remer said during a Wednesday morning news conference that more charges were forwarded to the Grand Forks County State’s Attorney Office. Remer said he anticipated three counts of felony gross sexual imposition, two counts of armed robbery, two counts of terrorizing and two counts of felonious restraint would be filed.
Police responded to an apartment building in the 3400 block of 13th Ave. N. early Monday after a man reportedly broke into an apartment through a sliding glass door. The man showed a gun, demanded money and sexually assaulted two women before fleeing, police said.
The women were taken to Altru Hospital but did not need treatment for any serious physical injury, police said.
Remer said police are not looking for anyone else connected with the incident, but still asked the public for any other information that might help.
Matthews’ listed address of 3514 11th Ave. N. is a short walk from where the alleged crime took place. Remer declined to say whether Matthews knew the victims. He also declined to say if a weapon has been recovered.
Remer said police have interviewed Matthews, but declined to disclose any details of that conversation. He said police would explore whether Matthews was connected to any other similar crimes in the area, but said at this time there’s no information to suggest that.
Matthews’ Facebook page lists Philadelphia as his hometown, and his photos suggest he may have moved here about a year ago.
Remer said Matthews would make his first appearance in court Wednesday afternoon.
