The chairman of the Spirit Lake Nation has cancelled a scheduled re-vote to recall the Saint Michael representative on the tribal council. The vote was scheduled for Friday, after an initial vote to decide the fate of council member Mardell Lewis ended in a tie. Not surprisingly, the decision brought with it a diverse reaction, with some applauding Chairman Russ McDonald for the decision, and some claiming he's ignoring the rights of the people.

McDonald originally scheduled a new vote after Monday's deadlock. In a memo released Wednesday, McDonald says a closer review of the tribe's constitution led him to change his mind. He says a majority is clearly needed to recall a council member. Since that didn't happen, Mardell Lewis will keep her seat. Lewis says she agrees with McDonald's interpretation of the constitution, and is satisfied with the decision. But those supporting the recall claim McDonald is going back on his word as tribal leader.

Recall supporters say they're still planning to meet in Saint Michael on Friday to vote for the recall, regardless of whether the council recognizes it or not.
