TIOGA, N.D. – Tioga Superintendent D’Wayne Johnston has resigned after he brought a firearm to school out of concern for safety of students and staff.

Johnston’s resignation, which will be effective June 30, 2014, was accepted by the Tioga School Board on Friday.

Johnston wrote in a memo to staff this week that he had a weapon on school property on Oct. 1.

“It was my determination that there was a heightened level of concern for student and staff safety,’ Johnston wrote in the memo.

A letter of reprimand has been or will be placed in Johnston’s file relating to the event, Johnston wrote in the memo.

Tioga is in northwest North Dakota, about 50 miles northeast of Williston.
