An East Grand Forks neighborhood was evacuated Wednesday morning after a backhoe struck a gas line.

It happened at 806 3rd Avenue Northeast just before 10 this morning. Natural gas was leaking for about 20 minutes before crews shut the line down. East Grand Forks Police and fire crews blocked off streets and evacuated homes in the area. Xcel Energy also responded, and shut off power to the area to avoid any serious problems.

Fire officials say the area is now safe.
