The Milton, North Dakota community continues to mourn the loss of Jeffrey Slama, a former resident who was shot and killed during a burglary last week at his home in Joplin, Missouri. Slama was born in Devils Lake and grew up in Milton. He was 58 years old. Jeff Slama hasn't lived in Milton for more than 40 years, but family friends say the loss still hits very close home. On October 16th, Slama called 911 from his home after an intruder entered. The dispatcher could hear Slama plead with the suspect not to shoot him. When deputies arrived they found Slama dead in his home. He still had the telephone in his hand.

Slama graduated from Milton High School in 1972, which is now a senior center. Friends of the family say they can't believe what's happened. Slama is survived by his wife, two sons, and three grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother and nine sisters.

A Prayer Service and visitation are being held in Slama's honor Monday night in Missouri. The funeral is Tuesday. The family is taking donations in Slama's honor. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be given to St. Vincent DePaul Society of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Joplin.
