The Grand Forks County Jail now has a Federal Transport Team that has
started moving Federal prisoners.
Its been about a year since jail officials started talking about the
transport team and after some setbacks the team was formed. One of the
issues is that people transporting Federal inmates must carry a gun,
but corrections officers aren't allowed to do that. The sheriff's
department worked with the jail to train the corrections officers. The
jail is reimbursed for staff time when they transport prisoners.
Bret Burkholder: "They provided approximently 96 hours of transportation in this time and I would expect, I haven't seen the billing yet, but it should bring in about 1800 in income for the staff time during the transport."
Jail administrator Bret Burkholder also told commissioners that the number of inmates at the jail is back up after being lower than normal over the summer months.
