A 49-year-old man was taken to Altru Hospital after threatening himself with what police believe was a knife Sunday afternoon.

The name of the man was not released and his condition was not immediately available, but Lt. Mike Ferguson of the Grand Forks Police Department said public safety is not threatened.

Police were called at 4:17 p.m. to a home in the 900 block of N. 4th St. A man inside the home was suicidal and threatening himself with "an edged weapon," Ferguson said.

Just after 5 p.m. the Grand Forks Regional SWAT Team was called to the home. About two hours later the man surrendered to police, and was taken to the hospital to be psychologically evaluated, police said in a press release.

Charges may be pending, Ferguson said.

Police weren't able to determine what weapon the man had because they didn't enter the home. They "did not have a legal authority to do so without a warrant," Ferguson said.
