A familiar figure is now the newest member of the Spirit Lake tribal council. Clarise Brownshield was sworn in as the Fort Totten representative Tuesday morningg, only five months after losing the seat in an election.

There have been vacancies on the tribal council since June. Now that every spot is filled, tribal leaders say they can get down to business. Brownshield beat another former council member, Shelly Luger, in a runoff election for the Fort Totten seat. Brownshield says her top priorities are fixing tribal social services and improving housing options for tribal members. She is returning to the seat she lost in an election against Russ McDonald this summer.

McDonald eventually became tribal chairman. Both sides say there's no ill will from the election, and that they're ready to move forward.

Brownshield says she'll focus on being honest and transparent with her constituents. She got to work right away on the council. Her first council meeting was Tuesday, and a meeting about tribal social services is scheduled for Wednesday.
