A Spirit Lake woman has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for abuse that led to a child's death. Thirty-two-year-old Hope Tomahawk Whiteshield, of St. Michael, was sentenced in Fargo Wednesday.

Authorities say Tomahawk Whiteshield threw her step-granddaughter who was just shy of 3 years old down an embankment in June, then bathed and clothed the unresponsive child and put her to bed. An autopsy concluded the girl died of a head injury. In July, she plead guilty to felony child abuse and witness tampering. The case was one of several held up by authorities to show the ineffectiveness of the tribe's child protection system.
