North Dakota Republicans have endorsed Fargo state Rep. Rick Berg as their preferred candidate for the U.S. House.

Berg defeated three other candidates Saturday at the state Republican convention in Grand Forks. He got 972 votes to runner-up Kevin Cramer's 442 votes.

Berg, Cramer, J.D. Donaghe (DON'-ah-gee) and DuWayne Hendrickson competed for the endorsement. Donaghe got 32 votes in convention balloting, while Hendrickson got five.

Berg will be running against incumbent Democratic Rep. Earl Pomeroy. Pomeroy is seeking his 10th House term.

Cramer praised Berg as a "wonderful patriot" who ran a great campaign. Donaghe said a prayer for Berg and his family.

After the vote, convention delegates agreed to give Berg a unanimous ballot.
