People in Manvel have been dealing with flooding this year, and an ice jam on the Turtle River has made that problem worse. Right now homes east of Manvel near the Red River are most at risk. Although the fire department has gotten fewer requests for sandbags this year than last year, flood waters are continuing to threaten roads and homes. The Turtle River is about five inches away from where it was in 1997. Local officials say this year's flood fight is different than last year's.
Steven Schumer/Manvel Fire Chief: "You're finding more water where you weren't seeing it last year, and then you're finding spots where you think there should be water and there wasn't water coming up. It's taken a little bit longer and now it's finally starting to come where it hasn't been before."
There are still sandbags available to anyone who needs them near Manvel. You can pick them up at the Manvel Fire Department.
The cold weather is expected to help lower the water level.
