The 2013 North Dakota deer gun hunting season is now open. One catch this year, the North Dakota Game and Fish Department is offering the lowest number of deer gun licenses in 30 years.

For the next several weeks the fields and woods of North Dakota will be filled with hunters. And while many were successful in receiving their hunting license, just as many were left without a license for this year's hunting season.

Fifty-nine thousand, 500 hundred deer gun licenses were issued this year. That's a drop of around 6,000 licenses compared to last year. With the drop in licenses, more than 40 thousand hunters who applied for a license were denied.

The drop in licenses is the result of a lower deer population, which could affect everything from hunters to retailers. As far as the decline, the Game and Fish department credits harsh winters and the loss of wildlife habitat.

Minnesota's deer gun hunting season opens tomorrow.
