The pumps didn't start until mid-June due to high water levels. They removed about nine inches of water from Devils Lake this summer,
but thanks to a big spring melt levels are still nine inches higher than last year. There are concerns the spring runoff next year could significantly raise lake levels because the ground is still too saturated to support any more moisture this winter.
"We'd like to see the things operate all year long if we could. The more water we could get off the lake before next spring would be a very beneficial thing for us around here, but we certainly understand the limitations of a pumped outlet," said Jeff Frith with the Devils Lake Basin Joint Water Board.
