UND head football coach Chris Mussman was relieved of his duties Monday by UND athletic director Brian Faison.

Mussman was head coach for six years and posted a record of 31 wins and 34 losses.

"I felt we were at a point where the program needed a change in direction," Faison said. "Chris and I had a talk this morning and I just thought it was time to make a change in leadership and now we're in the process of going through a national search."

Mussman joined the UND staff in 1999 as offensive line coach. He became offensive coordinator in 2001, the year UND won an NCAA Division II championship. He was promoted to head coach in 2008, succeeding Dale Lennon. Mussman led UND to a Great West Conference title in 2011.

Faison added, "I just want to say that Chris has done a remarkable job and I think the world of Chris. He led us from Division II to Division I, which is not easy. But I felt like we were at a point where we had to make a change."

North Dakota finished with a 3-8 record this season, going 2-6 in conference play. Of those eight losses, six were by 16 points or more, five were by 21 or more.

Asked when he decided to fire Mussman, Faison said, "It's something that has evolved over the last couple of ball games. I was looking at a lot of different things, it's not just about wins and losses, there are a lot of other things that can factor into it. The bottom line is we needed a change to step up in the Big Sky conference."

Faison said a national search for a new coach will begin immediately and added, "We just need to find the best fit for North Dakota," he said.

Faison said it will be up to the new head coach as to whether any of Mussman's assistant coaches will be retained.
