Supporters on the Standing Rock reservation have submitted a petition to tribal chair Charlie Murphy showing support for a reservation wide vote on UND's use of the Fighting Sioux nickname.

Supporters on the Standing Rock reservation have submitted a petition to tribal chair Charlie Murphy showing support for a reservation wide vote on UND's use of the Fighting Sioux nickname.

The petition has 1,004 signatures on it from people in 8 reservation districts.

Standing rock tribal chair Charlie Murphy accepted the petition and said it will be considered.

It will take a majority vote of the 17 member council to pass and supporters want a special vote within 90-120 days.

To this point the tribe has voted against a referendum vote, but supporters hope this petition will change that.

Archie Fool Bear/Nickname Supporter:"He told me and the groups that were meeting with him he would get it reviewed by the legal office, and get a resolution drafted for tribal councils action."

The next council meeting is one April 6th, that's when they would likely vote on the resolution asking for a vote.
