BOSTON, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, urged students and staff to shelter in place after local police received a report of a person on campus with a gun.

The Ivy League school said on its website there had been a "confirmed report" of a person with a gun on or near its campus. Earlier, Yale had said there was an unconfirmed report.

"We've notified our community," spokesman Tom Conroy said, adding that warnings of the incident had been sent to students, faculty and staff by e-mail and text.

Some 11,250 students attend the prestigious university, located 80 miles (129 km) northeast of New York City.
