MERCED, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a father and two children are dead after an apartment fire in California's Central Valley.

The blaze in Merced broke out around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. Merced Fire Chief Michael McLaughlin says crews arrived to find the apartment fully engulfed in flames.

He told KFSN-TV in Fresno (http://bit.ly/1bd9MUB) that five people lived at the home.

A woman and a 13-month-old baby were taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. They're expected to be OK.

Neighbors say the man escaped but then ran back in for the children. The victims haven't been identified.
